DEFERENCE BETWEN LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT



Leadership by contrast, is about coping with change (Kotter, 2001.p 4).Many  changes in the organization or in the world, volatile market conditions may request for good leadership(Kotter, 2001).

It has been identified Northhouse(2016)leadership is mix of these components

     A)Leadership is a process B) Leadership involves influence C) It happens in groups D) Works on common goals.

 .According to( Northhouse,2016.p 31)considering above four components leadership define as a process of whereby an individual influences a group of individual to achieve a common goal. Leadership may not have common definitions. It has described in various ways .It’s depends on the people involved in and the process, the organization or the situation (Northhouse, 2016).



Management is about coping with complexity (Kotter, 2001.p 4). According to the Fayol(1916)management is blend of planning, organizing, staffing and controlling. Management was implemented to minimize the disorder of the organization and and do the business very productively and systematically (Northhouse, 2016).

Rost (1991) has stated that leadership is multi directional inspiration association and the management is unidirectional authority association. Leadership is more focus on the method developing common purposes. Management is directing activities to achieve the given targets. Leader has followers and the manager has their subordinates

Leadership and management both are needed to get success in the modern business organization. Management and leadership have their own roles and features.  People have very good managerial skills and but not good in leadership, some have capacity to become good leaders but not good enough in managing. Companies train and develop their employee’s skills and knowledge to improve the leadership skills and the management skills and they really want on board leader-managers (Kotter, 2001).

9 Differences Between Being A Leader And A Manager





Manager make goals and the Leader make vision 


Leaders make aim and help their followers to make it actual. Leader see and think further than a single person see and think. Leaders join individuals to make something larger. They believe high operative team can achieve more than the individuals do alone. Managers make effort to evaluating and accomplishing goals while controlling situations.  

Leader are change agents, managers maintain the status quo

Leaders always welcome the changes and think there will be another way of doing the right thing. Mangers keep doing with what works and selecting  new systems, structures and process to make them well.



Leader are unique and manager copy


Leaders need to be themselves. They self-aware and - works to figure out the inimitable and differentiated personal image. Leaders are see through. Managers are imitate the competency and behaviors from others and follow the some else’s leadership style unless make their own.



Leaders take risk and managers control it


Leaders ready to try new things if they are failed they believe there’s another way of do this success. Manager works to reduce the risk involve in the organization and when they see risky thing, managers used to control or avoid risk rather accept the risk.                

Leaders think long term and managers think short term

Leaders do what they say going to do and self-motivated. Managers work for short term goals and they are looking for rewards



Leader grow personally and manages rely on existing, proven skills


Leader keeps learning new things every day in the changing environment and they know if they won’t do it they will fail in the industry. They find new information, data and keep learning. Managers survive on existing skills and get used to the recognized performances.



Leaders build relationships, managers build systems and process.


Leaders are concentrated on the people and they .They Keep Company with the stake holders .They build reliability and trust by delivering on their promise. Managers focused to the analytical make sure the systems are in order to achieve goals.

Leaders coach, managers direct

Leaders think their people have capable and confident to achieve goals. They fight and tell the people to do and how to do it. Managers allocate duties and give guidance to how to achieve it and expect the results.


Leader create fans, managers have employees

Leader have followers who go beyond the leader and the leaders help them to create their own brand .Managers have people who follow the said direction and work under the manager.

Trait Approach



Trait approach speak about leadership and it is based on the humans are born with special traits .Those who have special traits they believe that they are leaders .According to Northhouse(2016) identified common traits  intelligence, self-confidence ,determination ,integrity , and sociability. Mann (1959) refer the more than one thousand four hundred ideas regard trait approach and the leadership. Mann founded that some of traits that can be used to identify leaders from non-leaders. Intelligence, masculinity, adjustment, dominance, extraversion, and conservation are the six traits highlighted in Mann examination. Loard et al.(1986) reevaluated the Mann’s (1959) findings .Loard et al highlighted intelligence ,masculinity, and dominance are associated with leaders.  
Northouse (2016) discussed about the strength and weaknesses of trait approach.
Strength
1 This approach Support to what people think about the leaders that is leaders can do special things than a non-leader. Human beings would like see leaders as gifted people and trait approach emphasis his need.
2 Trait approach has good history. So many researches did the research, argue, discussed, critically evaluate the trait approach.
3 Focused only on the leader and
4 Itself shows us the benchmark if we want to be a leader in order to where we want to be.
Weaknesses
1 No fixed list of traits and it has endless .Findings are changed time time.
2 Trait approach did not talk about the situations the leaders are faced.
3 Interpretation of traits. Some researcher may found masculinity and dominance as crucial traits and some may argue with extraversion and empathy.
4 Trait approach not discussed about the leaders traits affect in the performance of the groups and teams.
5 Trait approach is not a useful approach for training and development for leadership.   Traits are inherited. Inborn traits cannot training or develop.

02 Theory claims not to be a trait theory however it lists major components that are trait-like
03 Theory introduced by after studying army personnel and how it apply to normal human beings
